Fiat Chrysler diesel ditch by 2021, as Marchionne’s boss sets out ambitious strategy

Fiat Chrysler automobiles will ditch diesel engines in their cars by 2021, becoming the last major manufacturer to abandon the controversial fuel.

The presentation of the five-year strategy, chief Executive Sergio Marchionne said Type of fuel will be stopped in their cars for the next three years in Europe – but he will remain in the company of commercial vehicles.

Outlining his plans, Mr. Marchionne – who took over the business 14 years ago on Friday – said that conventional gasoline engines will remain “in the vast majority of our products”, with 60pc a target for electric vehicles in Europe.

Speaking at the event, near Turin, boss of the Italian-American business added: “there is no single solution, no magic formula. We are confident that our know-how and options we have available.”

The plan focuses on four brands in a stable company – Alfa Romeo, jeep, Maserati and RAM – because Mr. Marchionne sees them as the “most protected” as self-driving technology is moving closer to reality.

Asked what will happen to the business if self-driving means that consumers will not actively search for specific vehicles or even to have them.

“All bets are off, if we move to a ‘white box’ where there is no connection between brand and consumer,” he said. “But I would fight to see which brand is in there that will survive if we move in white boxes”.

The main car also has ambitious plans to grow Alfa company by brand Romeo to 400,000 vehicles per year by 2022, compared with 109,000 vehicles sold last year, with the addition of six new models, including the return of the famous badge of the TLG.

Luxury brand Maserati has been tasked with doubling sales to 100,000 cars by 2022, the analysts say, adding an electric actuator with a historic brand means that it aims to take on Tesla.
